Our Services & Programs

Our Oldham County Chapter offers services that extend far beyond traditional Red Cross programs of Blood services and Disaster Relief.  We provide assistance during any disaster, and also pride ourselves in going the extra step to see that our clients have benefited to the full extent of our services.

Financial Assistance - Oldham County Red Cross helps families in crisis with housing or rental assistance, utilities, air conditioners for the elderly, medical office visits for children, and prescriptions.  Seasonal assistance provides back-to-school clothing for less fortunate students and Holiday baskets and present for families in need.  This assistance is one of the continuing and most important services we provide.  With your generous donations, this would not be possible.

Please help us to help others by donating in whatever way you can.  Go to our donation form to contribute.

Disaster Relief - Oldham County Red Cross serves as a disaster relief agency to individuals and families, providing food, housing, clothing, medical supplies, living expenses, tool replacement, and burial assistance.  We routinely help families each year that are victims of house fires or weather related emergencies like tornados and floods.

During the 1997 Flood, the Oldham County Red Cross assisted 397 families.  During the windstorm of 2008, many residents were without power for up to 10 days and OC Schools were closed for about one week.  During the recent ice storm of 2009, our staff set up a temporary shelter for hundreds of families.

Housing & Winter Help - The mainstay of a family is food and housing.  Housing assistance is provided through the Kentucky Housing Corporation by way of a self-sufficiency program.  We provide a service for some section 8 clients, teaching them to be self-sufficient in their housing needs.  Clients are required to meet with program directors in an attempt to keep them in the right direction.

Winter-Help is a community wide effort to help families who cannot afford to heat their homes.  For the past eight years, this has been supported by individual donations, including those who contribute through the Louisville Gas & Electric Company's Check-Off program.

Food Programs - The Oldham County Red Cross has two food programs to assist those in need.  The Dare to Care commodities food programs can help you each month getting food staples into your home.  This program is limited to one food box every 3 months.  The Red Cross Food Bank is open from 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. Monday-Friday.  Call the Red Cross for an appointment to pick up your food box.

The Cub Scout and Boy Scout troops and Dens of Oldham County help to keep hunger away.  Each November they do a county wide food drive.  All items collected go toward feeding the hungry.  The food we receive from the scouts also fills Holiday food boxes that families receive during the holidays.  Each year The Oldham County Red Cross receives over 10,000 cans of food from the scouts.  This food is sorted and distributed into food boxes that Oldham County residents can receive quarterly.

Food donations are accepted at any time.  If you are doing a food drive and collect more food than you can bring, we can pick it up for your group.  Please call to set up an appointment or if you need more information on setting up a food drive.

School Clothing & School Supplies for Kids - Each August The Oldham County Red Cross donates school supplies and clothes to those in need.  This program was started in 1990 and runs in conjunction with the Oldham County School Board's assistance.
Training Programs - Oldham County Red Cross instructors teach child care, first aid, disease prevention, and CPR throughout the community.  All Oldham County schools benefit from a training curriculum that includes first aid, infection control, rescue breathing, safe swimming, and how to prepare for emergencies such as fire, tornadoes, and injury response.
Service to Military Families - Service to Military Families and Veterans (SMF&V) is provided by caseworkers in our social Service area.  Here, military families can communicate quickly with one another and with military authorities any time an emergency occurs.  Another service we provide is family counseling assistance.  Veterans are also assisted when applying for their benefits and are represented before hearing boards, free of charge.

Volunteers - Volunteers are what make the Red Cross happen.  Volunteers make up 97% of the Red Cross staff.  Our volunteers come from all walks of life and a large percentage are under the age of 25.  Our work is made possible by people like you;  people who lend a helping hand.

Who Are Red Cross Volunteers? - Some volunteers help with a single event, some have been involved for many years, providing community services, leadership, organizing blood drives and helping to prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.  Some people even volunteer during their vacation time.  Volunteers are needed to help in many different capacities.  Not all volunteers will have an opportunity to save a life, but all volunteers will have the opportunity to make a difference and to provide service to the community.

Please contact us if you would
like to volunteer!

We are dedicated to the well being of our clients as we provide help and assurance for those in need.
